Discovering My Elephant Self on the Way to a New Home

Let’s start with the elephants.

Elephants made their way into my consciousness a few months ago. My husband and I started house hunting, and we expected to take years in the process because (as I said), “We are two lumbering elephants. We don’t move quickly and we don’t turn around easily.”

As I reflected on elephants, I suddenly felt deeply connected to them, to their empathy, dignity, grief, and solidity. I learned that they are powerful totem symbols of wisdom and loyalty.

I began to see elephants everywhere and to find their stories.

I met Misty and and her friend Shirley, and gained inspiration from rescued orphan elephants.  I dreamt about baby elephants.  I found a piece of elephant jewelry (in photo above), a long-forgotten gift from my father when he went to Africa. Elephants have been waiting for me.

As it turns out, my elephant self is not as slow as I thought. This weekend my husband and I saw a house we loved, and we bought it the next day. Our lumbering elephants are now dancing with delight!

Questions for Reflection: What are your associations to elephants? What would your elephant self say to you?

Writing Prompts: “When I think about elephants, the first thing that comes to mind is ______” (then keep writing); “I can imagine myself as a elephant who _____” (then keep writing); “After reading this, I’m drawn to reflect on ______” (then keep writing).

Oh Judy
I loved your blog and could not believe the beautiful ring you have and the connection to your father and Africa. I must admit since having met you and hearing about elephants, i hold a totally different view of them and love what they stand for, literally. Congratulations on your home, so excited for you both. Hugs, xxx

Hi Liz, I love that I’ve brought elephants here to my blog and bringing others into elephant consciousness. Thank you for joining into this world! I think there will be elephant spirits in my new house! hugs back to you, J.
